The Mysteries of Being Human
A space to reflect on facets of being – drawing from the Qur’an and heritage of the Ahl ul-Bayt.
We at Muhammadi Trust of Great Britain and Northern Ireland deeply lament the passing of Ayatollah Dr Sayyid Fadhil al-Hosseini al-Milani, an eminent scholar and a towering figure in the Islamic academic and religious community. His profound contributions to the field of Islamic jurisprudence and theology, coupled with his leadership at the International University of Islamic Studies and the Imam al-Khoei Foundation, have left an indelible mark on both the intellectual and spiritual domains of Islam in the West.
As the appointed representative of Ayatollah Abul Qasim Al-Khoei and, subsequently, Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Sayyid al-Milani was a pivotal figure in guiding the Muslim community in the United Kingdom and beyond. His scholarly works and advocacy for interfaith dialogue have significantly enriched Islamic thought and fostered greater understanding across religious boundaries.
We extend our deepest condolences to his esteemed family, and pray that Allah grants them patience during this time of grief. His legacy will undoubtedly endure, and our thoughts remain particularly with his children, as we join in prayer for the elevation of his soul to the highest ranks of Jannah.
Ameen.
The Muhammadi Trust is a charitable endowment that promotes Islamic spirituality and Self-Knowledge based on Prophetic traditions.
It publishes books, holds seminars and encourages contributions from established scholars that prioritise the universal and transformative nature of the Prophetic message; that in understanding the true nature of our own selves through outer practice and inner reflection, we learn to fulfil our real purpose in creation.
I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me. (Quran 51:56)
He who knows himself knows his Lord – Prophet Muhammed (saw)
How could I worship Him whom I do not know – Imam Ali (as)
The divine message of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was conveyed through the revelation of the holy Quran, his traditions, his perfect character and conduct, and the continuation of this transmission through the Ahlul Bayt (as).
”If the heart is sound, then the whole body is sound; if the heart is sick, then the whole body is sick” – Prophet Muhammad (from The Prophetic Traditions in Islam)
Al-Sadiq (as) said, “Surely the heart is constantly murmuring in the recess of the body, demanding the Truth; if the Truth reaches it, then it finds ease and rest.” (from The Prophetic Traditions in Islam)
In a time of major global upheaval and uncertainty, it is our sincere and humble aim, God willing, to promote these teachings of Islam that bring with them the pathway to the perfect balance of inner light and tranquillity with outer practices and courtesies.
The Muhammadi Trust has been in existence for more than four decades. During the early seventies, the number of Islamic institutions in the West were very few, as was Islamic literature in the English language. With migration from the subcontinent and other parts of the world, creating a growing Muslim population within the UK, there was an evident need for establishments that would serve the community at all levels.
Through inspiration from the late Raja of Mahmudabad, the then Director of the Islamic Centre in Regents Park (which was later built into the present day Regents Park Mosque) and the stewardship of the late Cmdr Qasim Husain as well as from the participation of energetic members of the community, the Muhammadi Trust of Great Britain and Northern Ireland was established.
The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, “Truly my progeny is like the ark of Noah floating amongst you – whoever embarks thereon
is saved.”
This book comprises a selection of sayings of the Imam, revealing his profound wisdom and far-sighted comprehension of truths on all planes-spiritual and moral, individual and social.

A revered collection of supplications and prayers attributed to Imam Ali ibn Husayn Zayn al-Abidin, the fourth Imam of the Ahl-ul-Bayt. The Sahifa-e-Sajjadiya comprises over 50 supplications with penetrating insights into the psychology of the soul, acute observations of the nature of life in this world, and meditation upon the divine qualities and attributes. In addition, the book contains moral and ethical teachings -the ideal inner and outer courtesy or adab of the Muslim in daily life, with regards to one's self, parents, children, friends and enemies -that are all the more compelling in being presented in the context of a dynamic relationship between the soul and its Creator.
1- 'In the name of God', the word of those who hold fast to Him, the speech of those who seek His protection! I seek refuge in God (high exalted is He) from the injustice of the unjust, the trickery of the enviers, and the oppression of the wrongdoers, and I praise Him beyond the praise of the praisers!
2- O God, Thou art the One without partner, and the King without having been made sovereign; no one opposes Thee in Thy decree and no one contests Thee in Thy kingdom!
3- I ask Thee to bless Muhammad and his Household, Thy servant and Thy messenger, inspire me with a thanksgiving for Thy favours which will take me to the utmost limit of Thy good pleasure, help me through the gentleness of Thy solitude to obey Thee, hold fast to worshipping Thee, and deserve Thy reward, have mercy upon me, bar me from acts of disobedience toward Thee as long as Thou keepest me alive, give me success in what profits me as long as Thou sparest me, expand my breast through Thy Book, lessen my burden through its recitation, bestow upon me health in my religion and my soul, estrange not my intimates from me, and complete Thy beneficence in what is left of my lifetime, just as Thou hast shown beneficence in that of it which has passed! O Most Merciful of the merciful!
